London Bus        Little Ben

While in England on a trends tour we found these icons, Big Ben wall decor and the Double Decker Bus Bunk  Beds. We are constantly searching for unique beds and accessories for kids. Here are just a few of our British discoveries. Currently the beds are not available for sale in the United States, but we are working on changing that.

Elf on the Shelf girl

Do you Elf on the Shelf?

Only a few days left until those creative, fun loving little elves make their annual appearances everywhere.

If you don’t elf yet, think about bringing one into your home. You could quickly fill your own picture album full of their crazy shenanigans. Some folks find the presence of an elf in their home a beneficial behavior modification for their young ones.

Behind the Tradition:

This classic tradition began when Santa Claus wanted to keep better track of the naughty and nice list. His idea was to have scout elves sent to adoption centers to sleep until families read the story together, gave the elf an individual name and adopted the elf on the web. Families can grant any name they want, but the name is required in order for the Christmas magic to be bestowed upon the elf. It’s like welcoming a new member of the family!
Once the elf arrives at a family’s home, he or she watches to see who is being good and who is being bad. In order for the elf to do the job efficiently, he or she hides in different spots of the house each day! The elf then travels to the North Pole when the family is asleep to give a daily report to
Santa. These daily reports help keep the naughty and nice list as accurate as possible before each Christmas Eve.
It’s important to not touch your elf, or else the magic will be lost.

Please share photos of your elf’s crazy shenanigans on our Facebook page.

Day One: High Point Fall Furniture Market.

White House Bunk Beds

Where to begin? There were so many great new finds on our first day at market. Here is a bunk bed we call the White House Bunk.

Scribbles Bunk BedsWith this bunk bed, budding artists are able to create works of art right on the ends of their bed.  Notice the conveniently placed pen holders along the top rail of the bottom bunk. You can also post messages, homework or other masterpieces on the magnetic whiteboard.

Purple Bling

Here is a soothing lavender suite in a velvety fabric with a touch of bling.

Corner Bed

Stuck in a corner with faux leather might be alright for the night.

Zippa-bed

Winner of the day was the Zip-a-Bed combo cover.

Every day parents ask us “how do you make a bunk bed?” Finally we have found an excellent answer.  Now there is an all in one system (sort of like sheets and bed cover built together) with an easy-zip side closure that not only makes it easy to get your bunk bed looking neat and tidy, but does so in a snap. This versatile design zips open at both the head and foot of bed. They will be available in a wide selection of soft and cuddly fabrics. The 100% brushed polyester microfiber makes the Zip-a-Bed easy care; machine washable and will tumble dry with minimal wrinkling. Innovative construction, sewn corners and under-bed straps secure the Zip-a-Bed to the mattress without smashing your hands in the side rails. Soon available in either twin or full size.

Moonshine for sore feet

The Phillips Collection offered an end of day elixir for sore feet – Moonshine for tired dogs! Luckily my dogs walked the day away in ugly clogs. So, no sore feet, and being not brave of heart, I passed on this opportunity. But tell me please, is there Moonshine sold in Minnesota, or just not a Yankee thing?

Designing Study Spaces for Scholarly Success

Summer has barely begun here in Minnesota. It is hard to believe that in some places around the country, school will be back in session in just a few weeks.

It is never too early to begin thinking about designing an effective study space for your kids. Parents play a key role in helping their children learn the organizational skills necessary for successful study.

Here are a few tips from Legacy Kids.

Routines are key. Pick a time of day to tackle homework (right after school, after dinner, right before bed) and stick with it. Plan on some breaks (for example young children don’t focus well for more than 20 minutes) as needed. End the routine with bags packed ready for the next day.

Make a work zone. Designate an area for homework and studying. The kitchen table might work, but not if traffic and distractions are high. A child’s bedroom is a great choice, as long as they have room to spread out materials and can concentrate. A table or desk to write on, place to stash supplies, and a memo board to post notes and a calendar are helpful. Good lighting, room for a laptop computer, and a comfortable chair are also considerations.

Post the goal. Setting a goal is easy. Remembering it as you work towards it is harder. Ask your student to make a sign about the goal. It could be a huge letter A or a drawing of your student doing something fun as a reward. Then post it where he will see it as he works.

Encourage organization. Give everything a place. Encouraging your student to pick supplies and get their study spot organized may help them keep it that way and put stuff back.

Be tough. No TV, email, devices (iPad or iPod) or calls during study time.

Consider Music. Don’t automatically ban music. Light background music may help your student work. Others may find music or radio commercials distracting. Earphones may help.

ping pong ball lamp

Everywhere you turn these days there’s another gotta try it DIY project. Looks like this weekend’s project is inspired by an older Marie Claire Idées using ping pong balls, upcycling an old lamp shade and a few cans of spray paint to create this whimsical pendant lamp.

Rescue an old lampshade, then remove the covering exposing the wire frame.  Thrift stores are great places to find lamp shades if you don’t have an old one laying around. For the ping pong balls try a Dollar Store. You’ll also need heavy nylon thread, a sturdy needle and a hot glue gun.

Spray paint the balls in groups using a different color for each layer. If you are using 6 rows, you will need about 30 balls per group for a total of 180 ping pong balls. After the paint has dried, with a large needle, poke a small hole into each ball on opposite ends.  Using nylon thread, make garlands of balls and knotting one end, then pulling the thread through each ball from one hole to the other. It’s just like beading. Fill up the garland until all of the balls fit around the diameter of your lamp shade’s frame. Tie the garland of balls around the lampshade structure. We will be using a hot glue gun to secure the balls to spots on the frame. Repeat each row of ping pong balls until the entire shade is covered.  For the light, pendant cord sets are available at IKEA HEMMA.

Please share photos of your creations.
