Over the years many an egg salad sandwich has been found in our school lunch boxes.  Now, this cute Eggheads project will make use of a few left-over eggshells; re-purposing of both the eggshells and egg cartons – yay! Nurture Store inspired us and in just a few days there is a bonus of cress that can be added to your next batch of egg salad.

We have also used grass seed for this project with great success.

Thank you Nurture Store for this great idea! For detailed instructions, pop on over to their website.

TulipsHere in Minnesota, we are hoping that there will be some “Spring ahead” for us and the sooner the better.  With eight-foot snow drifts and ice covered roads, there is not yet a visible sign in site.

Setting our clocks ahead early tomorrow morning will at least feel like the first step in looking forward to welcoming warmer weather and longer days.  After an unbelievable fifty days of subzero weather so far this year, Spring can not arrive fast enough.

It’s about time, literally and figuratively, to remember daylight saving (not savings) time officially begins tomorrow: Sunday, March 10, 2019, at 2 a.m. The concept of something much like DST was referenced by Benjamin Franklin in a satirical 1784 essay titled An Economical Project.

So let’s spring ahead.

Happy Birthday Dr. SeussYou’re never too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read with a child! – Dr. Seuss

Who hasn’t eaten some green eggs and ham? Have you ever put a cat on your hat or a hat on your cat?

Happy birthday Dr. Seuss!  He was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on this day way back in the year of 1904.

With 46 published picture books, Dr. Seuss is considered one of the greatest children’s book writers and illustrators of all time. How many of his books have you read over and over and over? I remember knowing my son at age 2 was a genius when he “read” his first Dr.Seuss book aloud, over and over and over.

On fish, two fish. You can make them too fish and learn how over at Simple Girl.

These are some of our favorite Seuss-isms, what are yours?

1.  “You have brains in your head.  you have feet in your shoes.  You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.”

2.  “Today you are you, that is truer than true.  there is no one alive, who  is you-er than you.”

3.  “From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere.”

4.  “Don’t cry because it’s over.  Smile because it happened.”

5.  “Today is your day!  You’re mountain is waiting.  So…get on your way.”

6.  “If you never did, you should.  These things are fun,  and fun is good.”

7.  “I meant what I said, and said what I meant.  An elephant’s faithful, one hundred percent.”

8.  “So the writer who breeds more words than he needs is making a chore for the reader who reads.”

9.  “And you will succeed?  Yes indeed, yes indeed!  Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed.”

10.  “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

So…“Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re really quite lucky!”H

Try Before You Buy

Most folks find it awkward but you really do have to lie down and give the mattress a try before you buy. Be sure to fully stretch out or curl up in your favorite sleeping position. Next, roll from side to side. Then sit up as if you’re reading in bed. It is important also to sit on the edge of the mattress to test its firmness. If the store employees give you a standing ovation, you have possibly provided their best entertainment of the day. A mattress purchase is a long term investment so you have done yourself a favor too.

We find that people are constantly confused with all of the different mattress sizes. Here is a simple explanation that we hope you will find helpful.

Twin or Single Size Mattress

A twin or single mattress is 39” wide x 74” long. This is the smallest mattress size available.  It’s ideal for children who have outgrown their crib or toddler bed. Also ideal for adults who have small bedrooms.  This size is commonly used for daybeds, bunk beds, dorm rooms, or a small guest bedroom. It’s not a recommended size for those sleeping with a partner.

XL Twin Size Mattress

An XL twin mattress is 6” longer than a twin size but same width. Ideal for children who are taller or for smaller size bedrooms. This is also great for tall adults who do not have room for a wider bed. Two XL twin mattresses make up the same dimensions as one king size mattress.

Full or Double Size Mattress

A full or double size mattress is 54” wide x  80” long which is the same length as a twin mattress but it is 15” wider. Full-size mattresses are a good choice for single sleepers who like to sprawl out or for couples who have a small bedroom.

XL Full or Double Size Mattress

An XL full bed might not be a common size, but it is a versatile one. A full extra long mattress measures 54″wide x  80″ long. It is just as long as a queen or king, but because of its narrower shape, it will fit better in smaller rooms. It is a great choice for teens or adults who want plenty of room to sleep but don’t want to sacrifice space in their bedroom.

Queen Size Mattress

A queen mattress measures 60” wide x  80” long. It is both wider and longer than a full size mattress.  Often preferred by a single person who really likes lots of extra sleeping space. It is the most popular size in the United States for couples. To comfortably fit a queen size mattress in your bedroom, it is recommended that your bedroom be at least 10’L x 10’W.

King Size Mattress

A king size mattress measures 76″ wide x 80″ long. It is the same length as a queen size but 16″ wider.  Couples requiring extra space will find the king size perfect. Families co-sleeping with young children or pets prefer this size. To comfortably fit a King size mattress in your bedroom, it is recommended that your bedroom be at least 12’W x 12’W.

California King Size Mattress

A California king size mattress is 4” longer in length but narrower by 4” than a standard king. It is extremely spacious for active sleepers or couples sleeping with young children or multiple pets. To comfortably fit a California King size mattress in your bedroom, it is recommended that your bedroom be at least 12’W x 12’L.

Crib Mattress

A crib mattress is  29” wide x 52” long. These mattresses are designed for baby cribs to be used by newborns to toddlers. They are designed until a child is about 18 months old or reaches 3 feet in height or begins climbing out of their crib. A firm mattress is necessary to prevent a newborn’s face from sinking in to avoid an increased risk of SIDS.
